ALKINOOS IOANNIDIS – KARINE POLWART

The concert is part of the events programme of the ECoC – Pafos2017

Within the programme line «World Travelers» to which this event belongs, the creative exploration knows no boundaries. The artistic works claim a new orientation driven by the metaphor of the eastern winds, known for their capacity to inflate the sails of a ship, as being a catalyst for the world’s desire to regain its lost unity and bring people together. In this rare, eclectic concert, Alkinoos Ioannides uniquely brings together Greek and foreign songs, a small acoustic ensemble and a symphony orchestra, the personal and the collective.

In the first part of the programme, Alkinoos will interpret songs from his well-known repertoire, joined by his regular collaborators, the outstanding soloists Yiorgos Kaloudis, Fotis Siotas, Manolis Pappos and Dimitris Tsekouras as well as by a special guest: the Scottish songwriter and composer Karine Polwart. Alkinoos and Karine have already presented in Scotland their common approach to older as well as to their own newly-created music. This will be the first time they present the fruits of their collaboration in Cyprus. Lyricism, originality and broader social and philosophical connotations characterize the musical journeys of the two artists. They both draw on the musical traditions of their countries of origin, which they imbue with a deeply personal approach and contemporary sounds, and together they offer us a musical «banquet» which bridges sounds, a co-creation about sharing roots and finding a common ground.

In the second part, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Yiorgos Kountouris, will fill up the stage. Alkinoos Ioannidis has orchestrated his songs for both the orchestra and his own group especially for this collaboration.
