Dear Friends of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra,
I welcome you to the new artistic season 2011-12.
The Management, the artistic and administrative staff of the Foundation and myself personally, strived with all efforts to ensure that the CySO continues its great cultural contribution with interesting concerts, educational programmes, community outreach concerts and other activities, always aiming at bringing the high Art of music and making it accessible to as wide a public as possible.
The programme selection was made with the objective of giving the opportunity to the music-loving audience to enjoy works from different periods of music history, from the international repertoire, as well as from works created by Cypriot and Greek composers.
The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra looks forward to welcome you to the concerts and wishes you enjoyable listening.

Alkis Baltas was born in Thessaloniki. He studied violin and theory of music at the State Conservatory of his hometown in the class of Solon Michaelides. In 1974 he graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with a degree in Law. He continued his musical education at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, and graduated with a diploma in composition and conducting.
- From 1983 to 1992 he was artistic director of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra.
- From 1994 to 1997 he held the position of the Artistic Director of the Greek National Opera.
- From 1997 to 1999 he held the position of the Artistic Director of the Music Ensembles of the Greek Radio
- From 2004 to 2008 the Kerkira Municipality appointed him Artistic Director of its Symphony Orchestra
- In September 2009 the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki appointed him Artistic Director of the Orchestra
- In March 2010 the Municipality of Veria appointed him Artistic Director of its Festival
- In March 2010 the “Filarmoniki Etaireia Kerkyras” appointed him Artistic Director of its Symphony Orchestra
- Since Summer 2011 the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation appointed him Artistic Director of the Orchestra
Currently, he is the Artistic Director of the Festival of Patmos “The Holy Revelation of Music”. He is also Director of the “Music College” of Thessaloniki, and the Hellenic Conservatory of Athens. At the same time, he holds a teaching position at the Department of Musicology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Alkis Baltas is a member of the Greek Composers’ Union. His works for chamber music, choir, orchestra, opera, etc. have been performed in Greece and abroad. His compositions have been won prizes in Greek as well as in international competitions (Italy and Spain). Recently a double CD with his works has been released from the “Iris” Record Company
He has conducted many orchestras in Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, the Soviet Union, Turkey, the USA, Argentina, Australia, England, and elsewhere.
