The concert in Constantinople will take place on 29 August at Ayia Irini, which was the first patriarchal church and today is one of the most important cultural venues. The orchestra was invited to participate in the first International Festival for Youth Orchestras in Istanbul through contacts made at conferences of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras. The Festival’s organizers were impressed by the standard of the Orchestra’s concert at the 2009 Kypria Festival. Istanbul is this year one of the European Capitals of Culture.
In Cyprus the concerts in will take place on 1 and 2 September 2010 at Strovolos Municipal Theatre, Nicosia and Larnaca Municipal Theatre respectively and are dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus. Both concerts start at 20:30. Tickets are available at the Theatres’ box office at €12 for adults & €7 for pensioners. Entrance is free for students, soldiers and Euro<26 card holders.
The programme is being prepared at the Orchestra’s International Summer Music Academy. The young musicians from Cyprus and at least 14 other countries are being trained under the direction of distinguished teachers from Cyprus and abroad. The Academy’s seat is the Pedoulas Gymnasium in the Troodos mountains (ca. 1150m. above sea level). This year it will run from August 16 to 27. Lunch-time concerts are given almost daily at 12.30. There will also be two evening concerts, on Saturday 21 and Friday 27, starting at 19.30. Entry to all concerts is free of charge.
The whole project is sponsored by the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras, the European Union Education and Culture Programme, OPAP Cyprus (Ltd), and CYTA. For more information you can contact the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation at 22 463144.
The Orchestra, the soloists and the Artistic Director:
The Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra was founded by cabinet decision in 1987 as Cyprus Youth State Orchestra, along with the Cyprus State Chamber Orchestra. As from January 2007, its administration was undertaken by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation. The Orchestra gives two to three concerts a year, often appearing as specialist groups, such as symphonic wind orchestra or chamber music ensembles. It performs regularly on official occasions and has provided programmes at such events as the prize giving ceremony of the European Schools' Competition, the opening of the State Educational Fair, the Euro-Mediterranean Forum of UNESCO and the 4th International Cyprological Congress. An activity of paramount importance is the annual International Summer Academy, organized at the high mountain resort of Pedoulas, with the participation of students from many countries under the guidance of highly qualified teachers of international standing. The international youth symphony orchestra which is constituted and trained at the Summer Academy has already given highly acclaimed concerts at the International Kypria 2007, 2008 and 2009 Festivals. Since 1990 the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra has been supported by the Music Workshop which offers talented young musicians free individual tuition by select instrumental pedagogues on all orchestral instruments.
