ALKIS BALTAS
Artistic Director and Chief Conductor

He was born in Thessaloniki. He studied Violin and Advanced theory (class of Solon Michaelides) at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. In 1974 he obtained a Law degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He continued his music studies at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, from where he received the Diploma in composing and orchestra conducting.

He has been Artistic Director of the Thessaloniki State Orchestra between 1983 and 1992. From 1994 until 1997 he held the position of Artistic Director of the National Opera of Greece and during the period 1997-1999 of the ERT Music Ensembles. From 2004 up to 2008 he was the Artistic Director of the Corfu Municipality Symphony Orchestra. Since 2009 he is the conductor of the Thessaloniki State Conservatory Orchestra and since 2010 the Artistic Director of the “Corfu Philharmonic Society” Symphony Orchestra. Since 2001 he is the Artistic Director of Patmos Sacred Music Festival. In the summer of 2011 the CySO Foundation appointed him Artistic Director of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

From 1992 up to 2011 he taught harmony and orchestration at the Music Department of the Arts School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is the Artistic Director of the “Music College” conservatory in Thessaloniki, where he taught composition between 1990 and 2011.

Alkis Baltas has been a jury member in many international competitions for orchestra conductors and composers. He is a member of the Greek Composers Union. Many of his works (chamber music, choral, orchestral, opera etc) have been repeatedly performed in Greece as well as abroad and many of them have received awards in international competitions (Italy, Spain). Recently a double CD with a selection of his works was released by “Iris”.

As a conductor, he has conducted all the Greek orchestras and has given concerts in many counties such as Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, Czech Republic, Sweden, Austria, Germany, former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Roumania, Cyprus, former USSR, Turkey, USA, Argentina, Austrialia, UK, a.o. He has participated as conductor in big International Festivals such as: Athens Festival, “Demetria” in Thessaloniki, Spoleto Festival (Italy), Festival of the Two Worlds (Atlanta, USA), Melbourne Festival, a.o.
