Constantin Papageorgio’s ballet music Illusoes is based on an imaginary scenario in which the composer creates illusive atmospheres. Mozart’s 1st flute concerto is full of brightness, melodic gracefulness and energy with plenty of virtuosic passages for the soloist. Poulenc’s only symphonic work, his Sinfonietta, was a commission from the BBC to celebrate the opening of the Third Programme. And indeed a celebratory work it is: plenty of dance rhythms, satirical moments and haunting melodies, clothed in classical folksiness, modality and lush harmonies.
