Within the framework of the Larnaka Municipality Festival of Classical Music
The Trois pièces brèves by French composer Jacques Ibert are full of energy and movement with cheerful melodies being exchanged between the performers. The Three shanties for wind quintet by the British composer Malcolm Arnold have a marked sense of humour whilst at the same time there is an underlying seriousness and unsettlement, a reflection of the times in which they were written. The wind quintet titled Kleine Kammermusik by German composer Paul Hindemith consists of five movements of contrasting characters and colours, thus making full use of the possibilities offered by a wind quintet ensemble. The concert closes with an arrangement for wind quintet of Claude Debussy’s Petite suite – originally composed for piano four hands – a joyful, impressionistic work with dreamy and airy melodies.
